The Ultimate Wedding Gown Timeline

Updated: August 18, 2026

You’ve set the date, booked the venue, and now it’s time for one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning: finding your wedding dress. But when should you actually start shopping—and how far in advance does your gown need to be ordered?

At Dimitra’s Bridal Couture, we always say that when it comes to your wedding dress, a year before your wedding is the sweet spot.

Why Shop for Your Wedding Dress a Year in Advance?

Once you find the one and place your order, your wedding gown can take approximately eight months to arrive at our boutique. Unlike something you order online and receive a few days later, designer wedding gowns are typically made to order, which means your dress needs time to be produced and delivered.

And remember: your gown arriving is not the end of the process!

Once your dress is here, you’ll also need time for alterations to make sure the fit is just right. Your seamstress may need several appointments to perfect the length, bodice, straps, bustle, or any other adjustments needed to make your gown feel like it was made just for you.

That’s why beginning your search and ordering your gown about 12 months before the wedding gives you a comfortable timeline without unnecessary stress.

What If My Wedding Is Less Than a Year Away?

First: don’t panic!

A shorter timeline does not necessarily mean you won’t be able to have the dress you love. Depending on the designer and your wedding date, we may still be able to order your gown with an expedited production timeline. However, rush fees may apply, and availability will vary by designer and gown.

The earlier you come in, the more options we’ll have to work with.

Don’t Forget About Sample Gowns

Working with an even tighter timeline? Sample gowns can be a great option.

A sample gown is a dress that is already available in the boutique, meaning you don’t have to wait months for a new gown to be produced and shipped. If you find a sample you love that works for your sizing and alteration needs, it can be an amazing solution for a bride planning on a shorter timeline—or simply a bride who falls in love with a gown that’s ready to go!

Our consultants can help guide you toward the options that make the most sense for your wedding date, whether that means placing a traditional order, exploring rush availability, or finding the perfect sample.

Our Ideal Bridal Gown Timeline

For the smoothest experience, keep this general timeline in mind:

  • 12 months before: Begin shopping and ideally say “yes” to your dress.
  • Approximately 8 months: Allow time for your designer gown to be made and delivered.
  • Once your gown arrives: Begin planning your alterations and fittings.
  • Shorter timeline: Ask your consultant about rush-order availability and potential fees.
  • Last-minute bride: Explore available sample gowns and other in-store options.

The Bottom Line? Earlier Is Better.

Wedding planning comes with enough deadlines. Your dress doesn’t need to be one of the stressful ones.

Shopping about a year before your wedding gives you time to enjoy the experience, explore different designers and silhouettes, order the gown you truly love, and complete your alterations without feeling rushed.

And if your wedding is coming up sooner? Come see us anyway. Our team at Dimitra’s Bridal Couture will walk you through the options available for your specific timeline and help you find a gown that makes you feel incredible—whether your wedding is a year away or just around the corner.
