Real Bride Obie: A Wedding Written in the Stars

Updated: September 15, 2026

Real Bride Obie and her husband, Abel, celebrated their love with a beautiful two-day wedding filled with Nigerian traditions, meaningful family moments, and an elegant celebration at the Chicago Cultural Center.

A Love Story That Began With a Prayer

Obie and Abel’s story began in college in 2018—just one week after a memorable conversation between Obie and her mother.

“I was on the phone with my mom complaining about being single, so she said a little prayer for me that ended with, ‘When the time is right, you’ll meet the person who is meant for you.’ Literally a week later, I met Abel!”

After their first date, the two were inseparable. Their relationship later became long-distance when Abel transferred colleges from Wisconsin to Illinois to play soccer. After graduation, Abel accepted an engineering position in Illinois while Obie remained in Wisconsin for medical school. Rather than continue living apart, he made the incredibly thoughtful decision to move to Wisconsin and commute three hours each day for work.

“And they say chivalry is dead!” Obie joked.

After more than seven years together, Abel proposed at CUT Steakhouse—one of their favorite restaurants in downtown Chicago. Obie’s younger brother, a photographer, hid nearby to capture the unforgettable moment.

A Meaningful Two-Day Celebration

Obie and Abel began their wedding weekend with a traditional Nigerian celebration honoring both of their cultures. Obie wore two custom gowns created and shipped from Nigeria. Her first look represented her own Igbo heritage, while her second was styled in the tradition of Abel’s Tiv tribe, symbolizing her becoming part of his family.

The following day, the couple held their classic wedding at the Chicago Cultural Center—a venue Obie had dreamed of getting married in since high school. With its breathtaking architecture, ornate details, and iconic Tiffany glass dome, the setting brought her longtime vision to life.

“Being able to live out that dream felt like a fairytale,” she shared. “It was truly the best weekend of our lives!”

Finding the Dress at Dimitra’s Bridal

For her Chicago Cultural Center celebration, Obie wore a breathtaking fitted and beaded gown by Stephen Yearick. The sculpted silhouette and intricate embellishments captured the grandeur of the venue beautifully, making Obie feel “regal, elegant, beautiful, and timeless.”

Dimitra’s Bridal was Obie’s very first stop while wedding dress shopping. She arrived with her mother and aunt, with three bridal appointments planned for the day—but everything changed when she tried on the dress.

“After trying on my dress at Dimitra’s, I bought it and canceled the other appointments!” Obie recalled. “All the employees were so helpful—even the ones who weren’t working with me specifically. I couldn’t have asked for a better team to help me pick my dream dress.”

The experience held an especially meaningful family connection: Obie’s mother had purchased her own wedding gown from a bridal boutique named Dimitra’s Bridal in London 27 years earlier.

“It felt like it had been written in the stars!”

A New Chapter

Following their April wedding, Obie and Abel moved to Boston, where they are now enjoying newlywed life and beginning an exciting new chapter together. No matter where life takes them, Chicago—and the unforgettable weekend when they became husband and wife—will always hold a special place in their hearts.

Congratulations, Obie and Abel! The Dimitra’s Bridal team was honored to be part of this beautiful, joy-filled love story.
